The newest iteration of OpenAI's huge language model, GPT-4, which powers popular apps like ChatGPT and the new Bing, has been released. According to the San Francisco-based research firm, GPT-4 is more complex than the previous version and has been trained on more data, costing more to operate. "We've launched GPT-4, the latest milestone in OpenAI's endeavor to scale up deep learning," according to the blog post announcing it from the company. While GPT-4 is a sizable multimodal model with human-level performance on a variety of professional and academic standards, it is less capable than humans in many real-world settings.
According to OpenAI, "The distinction between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 can be difficult to make in ordinary speech. When the difficulty of the assignment reaches a certain level, GPT-4 distinguishes itself from GPT-3.5 by being more dependable, inventive, and capable of handling far more complex instructions."
GPT-4 is an upgrade over ChatGPT-3.5 since it can produce text and take both text and image inputs. Similar to the text-only mode, ChatGPT-4 can accept a question with text and graphics, allowing the user to specify any language or vision task. Yet, it currently only produces text (natural language, code, etc.) from inputs that contain both interspersed text and graphics.
Despite all of its advantages, GPT-4 is not without limitations, as OpenAI noted in their blog article. Members of ChatGPT Plus can currently access GPT-4, but their usage is restricted. To obtain access to the API for the language model, developers can sign up for the GPT-4 API queue. According to a blog post by the company, Microsoft Bing also uses GPT-4. Depending on the feedback it receives, OpenAI has hinted at the prospect of developing a GPT-4 subscription plan for users.
