Explainer: How Long Will Immunity From Covid Vaccine Last?

20 Jun, 2022

89 percent of the adult population in India is fully immunised against Covid-19. Everything is gradually returning to normal. However, it is unclear how long the coronavirus vaccines will provide protection. It was nearly impossible to say until recently. A blood test that measures the magnitude and duration of someone's immunity to coronavirus has now been developed by researchers. Watch the video to learn more.

Antibodies are the response your body produces to fight a virus infection… but antibodies are only half of the picture.

T-CELL RESPONSE

Antibodies are the immune system's response to a virus infection... However, antibodies are only one component of the puzzle.

The T-cell response is the second component. They are an essential component of your immune system, or your body's natural defence mechanism. They are also known as "killer cells" because they attack virus-infected cells or cells.

B-CELL S

These B cells, which are the cells in the body that produce antibodies, also aid in the production of antibodies. Because gathering information about T-cell response is difficult, we did not have much information about Covid-19 until now. However, it appears that these difficulties have passed.

Researchers from Mount Sinai Health System in New York and Dhuk-Nus Medical School in Singapore have collaborated to develop a blood test that can not only measure immunity from the coronavirus vaccine, but also determine whether immunity exists. How long will this last? This test is known as blood.

According to Mount Sinai Assistant Professor Jordi Ochando, the combination of an antibody test and a T-cell test can provide information about a person's overall immunity.

According to a study published in Nature Biotechnology, this test could be useful for monitoring a large population's immunity. Furthermore, it can be useful in developing re-vaccination strategies for immunocompromised individuals, i.e. people whose immune systems are not functioning properly due to a disease.

According to Assistant Professor Ochando, cancer patients' B-cells, or the cells that make antibodies, frequently begin to decline as a result of drugs like rituximab. It is critical to monitor these patients' T-cell immunity in this situation.

Immunocompromised people must be protected for the sake of public health. According to a study published in the medical journal Msphere, researchers observed the virus evolve in immunocompromised people over a 6-month period. Which can evade the immune system by weeing and also spread more widely.

dqTACT test

The dqTACT test produces results in 24 hours, making it the best option for monitoring the immunity of a large population.

The dqTACT test stimulates the T-cell response, which is critical in virus combat. This is because the antibodies response of people suffering from chronic coronavirus disease does not function properly. Furthermore, sub-variants such as Omicron do not appear to have a significant effect on vaccine antibodies. In this case, silencing the T-cell response could be an effective weapon against Omicron sub variants.

In Europe, the DqTACT test has received Se-vid certification. Simultaneously, clinical trials are being conducted by the Food and Drug Administration. T-cell memory can last up to 6 years in patients with coronaviruses, according to a 2011 study, but antibodies do not. Tracking T-cell immunity becomes critical in our fight against covid-19 in this situation.
