21 Jun, 2022

The number of COVID-19 cases in India has increased in recent days, and people are concerned about a possible fourth wave. COVID booster shots have become our only hope in these uncertain times. According to a recent study conducted by the ICMR and Bharat Biotech, the Covaxin booster dose improves vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19's Delta variant and Omicron variants BA.1.1 and BA.2. To learn everything about it, watch this video.

Covaxin Booster Dose Increases Vaccine Efficacy For Delta

The majority of the population now has access to the Covid-19 booster dose. However, there were still concerns about the booster dose's effectiveness against the Delta and Omicron variants, which were reported to evade vaccine immunity.

A recent study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research and Bharat Biotech has dispelled such fears. According to the findings, the Covaxin booster shot is extremely effective against the Delta and Omicron variants BA.1.1 and BA.2.

In a Syrian hamster model, the effectiveness of Covaxin after the second and third dose immunizations was compared to the Delta and Omicron variants.

The Syrian hamster is a small animal model used to research human diseases.

Bharat Biotech and ICMR scientists recorded viral load, which refers to the amount of virus in an infected person's blood, as well as lung disease severity and antibody response, in the study.

When it comes to the Delta variant, it was discovered that the lung damage was significantly reduced after the booster dose; viral load and virus shedding were also significantly reduced.

When a person is infected with a virus, he or she sheds the virus. The virus then multiplies within the host's cell before being released into the environment via sneezing, coughing, or even speaking. This process is known as "shedding," and it is through viral shedding that COVID-19 spreads from person to person.

In terms of the booster shot's effectiveness against Omicron variants, lung disease severity and damage were significantly reduced. The immunised group also had lower virus shedding and viral load.

In a nutshell, if you were hesitant to get the booster dose due to a lack of research, the latest study by the ICMR and Bharat Biotech has confirmed that administering the Covaxin booster dose will significantly increase protection against the Delta variant and the Omicron variants BA.1.1 and BA.2.
