Mary Elizabeth Truss, a British Conservative politician, was born on July 26, 1975. She has held the positions of Minister for Women and Equalities since 2019 and Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs since 2021. She has served as the South West Norfolk district's Member of Parliament (MP) since 2010. Under David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson, she held a number of cabinet posts.
Truss was president of the Oxford University Liberal Democrats and a student at Merton College in Oxford. She earned her degree and joined the Conservative Party in 1996. She was an employee of Cable & Wireless, Shell, and Reform's deputy director. As a result of the general election in 2010, Truss was elected to the parliament. She advocated for change as a backbencher in a number of policy areas, including childcare, mathematics instruction, and the economy. She established the Free Enterprise Group of Conservative MPs and authored or co-authored a number of papers and books, including Britannia Unchained and After the Coalition (2011). (2012).
Prior to being named by David Cameron to the Cabinet as Secretary of State for the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs during the 2014 cabinet reshuffle, Truss served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Childcare and Education from 2012 to 2014. She backed the Britain Stronger in Europe movement, which favoured the UK's continued membership in the EU, during the 2016 referendum, although she later backed Brexit. Truss became the first female Lord Chancellor in the 1,000-year history of the position when Theresa May named her Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor following Cameron's resignation in July 2016.
Truss was chosen to serve as the Treasury's chief secretary after the 2017 presidential election. Truss endorsed Boris Johnson's campaign to lead the Conservative Party after May's resignation in 2019. Truss was given the positions of President of the Board of Trade and Secretary of State for International Trade by him. Johnson appointed her to the position of Foreign Secretary in the 2021 cabinet reshuffle, taking Dominic Raab's place. On December 19, 2021, Truss succeeded David Frost as the government's principal negotiator with the European Union and chair of the EU-UK Partnership Council.
