What Is PCOS and what is its with Obesity? Watch Video

PCOS and Obesity is one of the rising problems due to lifestyle changes and lack of nutrients in food and exercise. As per reports, women who are obese are at far more risk of developing symptoms of PCOS. In this special interview Dr Vikash Singhal from Medanta Hospital, Gurugram explains the link of Obesity and PCOS and tells some effective measures to take to control obesity and PCOS. 

What is PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder which causes enlarged ovaries and develops small cysts on the outer edges. While the exact cause of polycystic ovary syndrome is not yet defined, it majorly involves combination of genetic and environmental factors. The early Symptoms of PCOS mainly includes menstrual irregularity, excess hair growth, acne and obesity, and more

Symptoms of PCOS

Here are the symptoms of PCOS- 

  • abnormal menstruation

  • absence of menstruation

  • heavy menstruation

  • irregular menstruation

  • short and light menstruation or spotting

  • Obesity

  • Overweight

  • Or weight gain

Some more symptoms also include- infertility, acne, dark patches of skin in folds and creases, depression, inappropriate male features, loss of scalp hair, oily skin, or unwanted hair


Link of PCOS with Obesity

According to scientific definition,  PCOS is associated with high rates of glucose intolerance resulting from defects in insulin action and β-cell function in the body. Women suffering from Obesity are also at higher risk of PCOS. Moreover, Obesity substantially exacerbates defects of PCOS so obese reproductive-age women with PCOS are at very high rates of glucose intolerance.
