It is clearly visible that the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India has hit the country really hard where young people were affected more by the deadly Coronavirus. And with this, the country faced a surge in hospitalization, which lead to oxygen crisis and medical infrastructure crisis in the country.
Well, comparing the situation to the first wave of the Covid-19 virus, more people were affected, and the virus started affecting people at a faster pace. While pondering on the situation more, does this happened because of the ignorance of mild symptoms, not getting vaccinated properly, or because of the variants of strains of the virus.
It must be noted that most of the Covid-19 infections are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, however, in some of the patients who are already suffering from comorbidities such as Diabetes, Hypertension, etc, the things may turn severe, as these comorbidities make the condition more vulnerable.
But to the fact that many young people with no underlying diseases were affected badly by the Covid-19 virus, the reason behind the same is a phenomenon known as Cytokine Storm.
Cytokine Storm refers to an out-of-control, dangerous immune response that can occur in the Covid-19. It is basically the response of our immune system, wherein cells together release Cytokines chemicals, which further help in attacking and curbing the infections in the body, and the whole process is a controlled response.
However, when a person is affected by the Covid-19 virus, the control of the immune system goes unmanageable, and the release of Cytokines decreases, and the same start attacking its own normal cells.
Due to the phenomena, the first organ to be attacked becomes the lungs, which further hampers the Oxygenation to other organs and Nuemonea. Subsequently, the Liver, Kidneys, and Heart are also affected, which leads to a multi-organ failure, and as a result, to death.
It is difficult to detect which person is at risk of the Cytokine Storm, however, the way to detect the same is to keep a track of your symptoms.
Patients suffering from the Covid-19 virus are advised to check their fever regularly and to consult a doctor immediately if the same doesn’t go off for 4 to 5 days, as this may be a sign of Nuemonea.
Also, patients are advised to track their Oxygen Saturation level, as the same shall not dip below 94.
Other warning symptoms of the Cytokine Storm are Dry Cough, Chest Pain, Shortness of Breath, Headache, and Dizziness, considering these symptoms, immediate hospitalization may be required.
To avoid such situations, patients are advised to monitor their Body Temperature, Oxygen Saturation Level, Blood Pressure level, and Pulse Rate at regular intervals.
